Colin Morgan takes to the stage this summer
This April, London will see 27 year old Irish actor Colin Morgan making a return to his theatrical roots, as he plays the role of Ariel in The Globe’s production of The Tempest. Some few weeks ago, he claimed Best Drama Performance at the National Television Awards for his title role in the highly popular BBC show, Merlin, and now he’s on a roll. With period drama Quirke also in the pipeline, it looks as though it’ll be a busy year for Colin.
Having previously played the role of Ferdinand in Shakespeare’s classic, it will be interesting to see what he makes of this wildly different role - we’re sure he’ll tackle it with his usual brilliance. There wasn’t a dry eye in my house after watching the finale of Merlin, and I’m sure the same can be said for many, many others.
His sudden propulsion into the spotlight is more than deserved, and hopefully he’ll stay there for a long time yet to come. On acting, he’s said, “People often ask me what inspired me to become an actor, and the truth is I can’t answer that. For me, it was always more like a natural instinct. Every part, every performance I have ever taken has just been about feeding that desire to act.”.
It’s clear that he is truly passionate about his art, and that dedication shines through in his outstanding performances. I wish him the best of luck for the future - not that he’ll need it!The Tempest opens at Shakespeare’s Globe on the 23rd of April, and runs until the 18th of August. Colin will play his Ariel against Roger Allam’s Prospero, and Jessie Buckley’s Miranda.
COLIN MORGAN | MAKING OF MERLIN S5 - ON SET
“Be strong and hold my hand
Time becomes for us, you’ll understand
We’ll say goodbye today
And we’re sorry how it ends this way …
Never let them take the light behind your eyes
I failed and lost this fight, never fade in the dark
Just remember you will always burn as bright”
—“The Light Behind Your Eyes,” My Chemical Romance
